PE Curriculum Overview
As part of our broad and balanced curriculum, our sporting provision encourages children to become independent, determined and resilient learners. We encourage children to be healthy and active and to develop a lifelong sporting passion. This is all promoted through our successful PE curriculum, which is taught by our dedicated Sports Coach and our teaching staff. We offer the chance to participate in lunchtime and after school clubs. Children also enjoy participating in a range of inter-school competitions.
Our children in Years 1-6 enjoy their weekly PE lessons covering a wide range of sports. Children participate in a short daily PE lesson which provides them with frequent opportunities to be active, supporting both their physical health and overall learning. Regular bursts of physical activity have been shown to improve concentration, behaviour, and readiness to learn. These lessons each day help children develop core physical skills such as balance, coordination, and agility, which form the foundation for participation in wider sports and physical education activities. Our older children's daily PE lessons are at the start of each day as we believe this helps to prepare them both physically and mentally for learning. Engaging in physical activity first thing in the morning increases energy levels, focus, and alertness, setting a positive tone for the rest of the school day.
In addition, in Autumn 1, Summer 1 and Summer 2 half-terms, the children also enjoy an additional PE lesson taught by their class teacher to maximise coverage of a wide variety of sports to enable the children to progress their skills and knowledge and apply these in different sports. due to the weather getting warmer over the coming weeks. Year 1-6 will also have an extra PE lesson every week, like they previously did during the Autumn term to increase participation in sport and physical activity.
Throughout all our PE and sport provision, our children will be active and improve their mental and physical well-being. An action-packed annual Sports Week is also held to fully immerse children in a variety of sports. Our extended PE opportunities gives pupils the chance to create lasting memories and inspire them to take part in, and spectate, a wider range of sports. We view sport as a tool to boost children’s confidence and break down barriers. It encourages teamwork, class togetherness and morale.
Our children were very excited in September 2025 when we launched a new sport into our PE curriculum - Quidditch! We purchased official youth Quidditch equipment, changed our four house teams and enjoyed a special launch day! The Harry Potter theme has captured the children's imagination, making PE lessons even more exciting and accessible. We appreciate that some children don't always enjoy traditional sports but by linking elements of our PE curriculum to the world of Harry Potter, this approach captures children’s imaginations and motivates them to engage enthusiastically with the sport. This new element to our PE curriculum was complimented in a newspaper article.
Landywood's Swimming Awards
Swimming is a vital part of your child’s development and is an important part of our PE curriculum and Landywood. Children in Key Stage 2 participate in weekly swimming lessons. Our school swimming award system focuses on the important values and behaviours as children’s swimming skills develop. Children receive progressive swimming awards are they are move along the pathway, which are presented in our termly Sporting Achievement Assemblies. The children also are given the exciting opportunity to apply their swimming skills in an annual inter-school gala. All children participate in the gala, no matter their ability, all earning points for their house teams through a range of competitive swimming races and our very own 'boat-pull' event.
At the end of the 2024/25 academic year, our Y6 children achieved the following;
