Our Apple Journey
Empowering Every Child to Be the Best They Can Possibly Be
At Landywood Primary School, technology is a natural part of learning. Our one-to-one iPad programme has transformed the way children learn, create, communicate and collaborate, helping us build a culture of independence, creativity and innovation.
Over the last seven years, we have carefully developed a digital ecosystem that places learning first. Through purposeful use of iPad, investment in professional development for our teachers, and strong partnerships with families, we have created an environment where every child has the tools to succeed both in school and beyond.
Technology with Purpose
Our vision is simple: to help every child be the best they can possibly be.
We believe digital technology should enhance our already strong curriculum rather than replace it. By embedding iPad into a carefully designed learning environment, we empower children to:
- Learn independently
- Develop confidence and resilience
- Communicate effectively
- Think creatively
- Access learning in ways that suit their individual needs
- Build the digital literacy skills required for the future
Every decision we make is guided by one question: How will this improve outcomes for children?
Our Journey
Our digital transformation has been a carefully planned journey built on a clear vision, strong leadership and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Building the Foundations
Our first steps included:
- Investing in a structured computing curriculum
- Developing leadership capacity through a dedicated Computing and ICT Lead
- Improving digital infrastructure by gradually investing in iPads to roll out throughout each year group
- Upgrading school-wide Wi-Fi, including outdoor coverage
- Investing heavily in staff training and professional development
- Beginning our home iPad scheme for parents to strengthen our home-school technology link
Most importantly, we focused on building staff confidence and creating a shared vision for digital learning.
Growing Our Provision
Working alongside external partners and consultants, we gradually introduced iPads into classrooms and developed a sustainable model that could grow over time.
As confidence increased, iPads became embedded across the curriculum and throughout daily school life.
Today, we have:
- A fully embedded one-to-one iPad programme
- Apple Teacher accredited staff
- Outdoor Wi-Fi supporting learning beyond the classroom
- A thriving Digital Leaders programme
- Strong parental engagement
- A community-supported home iPad scheme
This journey has culminated in our application to become an Apple Distinguished School.
Why iPad?
A Tool for Independence, Creativity and Inclusion
We chose iPad because it provides children with far more than access to technology.
It enables pupils to:
- Research independently
- Capture and reflect on learning
- Collaborate with others
- Access personalised support
- Create meaningful content
- Demonstrate understanding in multiple ways
Rather than limiting children to one method of recording learning, iPad gives them the freedom to choose how they communicate their ideas.
Children may present their learning through:
- Writing (both via typing and with a stylus)
- Audio recordings
- Podcasts
- Video presentations
- Animation
- Digital books
- Green screen projects
- Collaborative multimedia creations
This flexibility has helped create a culture where every child can succeed and their creativity can flourish!
Developing Independent Learners
One of our key aims has always been to increase pupil independence and to prepare our pupils for an ever increasingly digital future.
Through one-to-one iPad access, children have become active participants in their own learning journey.
Pupils can:
- Access teacher models and resources independently
- Review learning at their own pace
- Use digital scaffolds and support materials
- Reflect on their work through recordings and playback
- Collaborate with peers
- Self-assess and improve their work
The result is a school culture where children confidently take ownership of their learning and develop the skills needed for lifelong success.
Home iPad Programme
A key milestone in our journey was the introduction of our community iPad scheme. The programme enables families to access the same technology used within school, creating continuity between home and classroom learning.
The scheme allows pupils to:
- Access learning resources from home
- Complete personalised learning activities
- Continue projects beyond the school day
- Develop digital literacy skills
- Share learning with their families
Each year, parental participation remains strong, demonstrating the trust and confidence families have in our approach.
Continuing to Innovate
Our journey continues!
As we apply to become an Apple Distinguished School, we remain committed to innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.
We will continue to explore new opportunities, strengthen our digital infestructure and ensure that every child has access to the tools, experiences and skills they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.
At Landywood Primary School, technology is not the destination, it is the vehicle that helps every child become the best they can possibly be.
